Is it safe to go back to school in the second wave of COVID-19?

It is one of the toughest decisions parents have had to make this century – whether children should attend school or not during the pandemic.

"We have to look to the science for an answer, knowing that the only certainty is uncertainty when it comes to the novel coronavirus that has often baffled virologists and epidemiologists. But, from what we do know of the first wave of the pandemic, reopening schools for in-person learning does not seem to significantly increase community transmission of the virus, and this has been tested around the world," says Dr Patel.

He adds that this outcome depends on schools following COVID-19 safety protocols, which many schools committed to and successfully maintained in 2020. Government will also advise about school readiness and excessive spread of the virus and adjust school opening and closing accordingly.

"We also know that children thrive at schools and, therefore, schools should aim to have students attend school in person, which is how they learn best. With the correct safety measures, we can help keep students, teachers and staff safe," he says.

Mental health impact could outweigh the impact of the virus

"Schools provide more than academics to children. It is essential to learn reading, writing and mathematics, but students also learn social and emotional skills, get exercise and have access to support services at school," says Dr Patel. "Importantly, the science tells us that healthy children appear less likely than adults to have symptoms and severe illness from COVID-19. Early studies also suggest that those under age 10 may be less likely to contract COVID-19 and spread the infection," he adds.

With case numbers high during South Africa's second wave of the pandemic, children with high-risk medical conditions are advised not to attend school.

Additionally, schools still need to plan for exposure, such as isolating students who are ill, doing contact tracing, providing PPE (personal protective equipment) for healthcare workers at school, and doing proper cleaning and disinfecting. Even with all measures in place, school during the COVID-19 pandemic may not feel like normal in the months ahead. Children and parents, as well as teachers, must mind the mental health risks that may result from isolation, changing sleep patterns or excessive screen time when home-schooling. "At the same time, anxiety around in-person schooling should also be managed and accommodated. We are all in this together, and we have to work together to overcome the pandemic, whether we are infected or not, because the world as we know it has certainly changed," says Dr Patel.

Changes to the Vitality Drive for Business program

Dear Discovery Business Insurance clients

We have made changes to the Vitality Drive for Business programme

This programme has grown steadily since it was launched in May 2018. Over this period, we have collected over 5 million minutes of driving data and drivers have earned over 8 600 Active Rewards.Using our learnings and experience we have gained so far we are now ready to update the Vitality Drive for Business programme. We aim to improve engagement with these changes by giving your clients more rewards for driving well. These updates to the Vitality Drive for Business programme will take effect from the July 2020 cash back calculation.

Clients can now earn cash back per vehicle
To recognise good driving at vehicle level, clients will now earn the Vitality Drive for Business cash back for each vehicle on the programme based on that vehicle's driving behaviour. Their monthly company cash back will be the sum of the cash back earned by all vehicles on the programme that month. They will earn this cash back monthly and we will pay it annually in the month after the end of the plan year.

Default score increased to 65
New vehicles will get a minimum score of 65 for the first three months of joining the programme, regardless of whether the vehicle's tracking device is working or not. This is to give your clients enough time to get tracking devices installed and working in new vehicles and to encourage them to improve their driving behaviour.

If the vehicle's actual score is higher than 65 during the first three months, we will use that score instead of the minimum default score. This means new vehicles will get a minimum default Bronze Vitality Drive status and clients will get 10% of the vehicles' monthly premiums back just for joining Vitality Drive for Business.

Company score calculation simplified
We have simplified the company score to be a straight average of the scores of all vehicles on the Vitality Drive for Business programme. We use the client's vehicle scores on the last day of each calendar month to determine their company score for that month.
We'll still use the client's company score to determine their company status for that month and will use the company status to determine the client's discount percentage at Tiger Wheel & Tyre.

Diamond status is now based on the percentage of vehicles tracking
To encourage clients to engage with the programme and make sure that their vehicles' telematics devices are working, we have updated Diamond Vitality Drive status to be based on the percentage of vehicles that get a valid score each month. Diamond status will now apply monthly to both vehicle and company level. Each vehicle and the client's company will earn Diamond Vitality Drive status monthly if they achieved Gold status and more than 80% of their vehicles got a valid score for that month.

We will backdate these changes and adjust the cash back for all new Vitality Drive for Business plans that started in the 12 months since 1 August 2019, as well as for all active Vitality Drive for Business plans that renewed from 1 August 2019. None of your clients will be affected negatively by these changes. If the adjustment results in a higher cash back for the past period, we will pay the difference to your client. However, if the adjustment results in a lower cash back, we will not make any changes to their rewards earned to date.

With these updates to our Vitality Drive for Business programme, we are sure that your clients will get even higher rewards for driving well and engaging with the Vitality Drive for Business program.
