Discovery Health 2017 Options

It’s that time of the year where you get to choose next year’s medical aid plan. Some of us will be downgrading, while for others, an upgrade is on the cards. Interested in finding out what Discovery Health is up to in 2017?

The media has announced an increase of 14.9% for Discovery Health. However, we need to put this into perspective as this increase is only applicable on ONE plan of Discovery Health. Some plans will have a much smaller increase.

Targeted enhancements and changes for 2017:
  • Major Joint Network - a national network of doctors and hospitals contracted on the quality of outcomes for elective hip and knee replacements
  • Specialised in-hospital Psychiatry Network – National network including facilities, full-time psychiatrists and psychologists and trained nursing staff
  • Screening - All members will now only qualify for one mammogram every two years and one pap smear every three years
  • Keycare members – Hospital Network will be divided into a two-tier network that ensures members maintain access to an extensive network of private hospitals. Members will receive full cover in the full cover network hospital and hospital accounts in the partial cover network will be covered at 70% of discovery health rate only.
Some of the questions you need to ask are:
  • Do you or any of your dependents use chronic medication
  • Do you want cover for day-to-day expenses? (eg. GPs, Dentists, X-rays)
  • Are you prepared to pay less but use a network of hospitals and doctors
  • Would you like in-hospital cover of 100% / 200% / 300%
  • Did you spend too much on a medical aid which was never fully used?
  • Did you spend too little on a medical aid resulting in having to make co-payments for procedures or running out of savings early in the year?
Benefits to consider:
  • Trauma Recovery Extender Benefit (available on all plans offering a savings portion)
  • Smart Plans offer unlimited GP visits with a small co-payment
  • Screening and Prevention Benefits
  • Diabetes Management Programs
  • Oncology Programs
